What Tipscale does
Tipscale is a scale with two pans. Every minute you spend in a moving vehicle weighs down the left one, and every step you take weighs down the right. Win the day by outwalking what you rode, and above all win the week.
How rides are detected, and why one can be missed
Tipscale asks iOS what kind of movement your phone has been doing. iOS keeps about a week of that history, worked out from the phone's own sensors, and it says things like walking, running, cycling or automotive. Tipscale reads the automotive stretches, joins the ones separated by a short stop, and books each one as a ride. It reads history rather than watching live, so a ride usually appears a few minutes after it ends, which is why the app can tell you about a ride you have already finished.
It is good and it is not perfect:
- A very short trip can be missed. A two-minute hop may never look like a journey.
- A bus or a tram usually reads as a car, because to a phone it is one.
- A train often reads as nothing at all, because a smooth carriage barely moves the sensors.
- A walk with your phone on a table is not a walk, and a phone left in a car that someone else drives is a ride you did not take.
There is no way to correct a ride by hand in this version, and that is deliberate: a number you can edit is a number that means nothing. If detection is badly wrong on your phone, write and tell me.
Three things people ask
"Nothing is being weighed."
Tipscale needs Motion & Fitness. Without it there is no way to tell a car from a walk, so rather than call your day car-free it says it cannot see. Turn it on in iOS Settings, Privacy & Security, Motion & Fitness, Tipscale. Tipscale keeps counting your steps either way, and the days it could not watch are marked as not measured rather than counted as losses, so they cannot break your streak.
"I never get the Ride ended notification in the car."
If you use a Driving Focus, iOS holds notifications back while it is on, which is exactly when a ride is happening. "Ride ended" is sent as Time Sensitive, which a Focus will let through once you allow it: iOS Settings, Focus, Driving, then allow Time Sensitive notifications for Tipscale. A Scheduled Summary does the same thing for a different reason, and Tipscale says so in Settings when it detects one.
"What happens after the seven days?"
Everything is unlocked for seven days, with no payment and nothing to cancel. After that, Today keeps working in full: your rides and steps keep being counted, your history keeps growing, and the widgets and the watch keep their last reading. The Week tab, Trends, the badges, notifications, the widgets and the watch app need Tipscale Pro, which is monthly, annual or a single lifetime payment.
Nothing you recorded is lost or held back. Unlock Pro whenever you like and it is all there.
Other things worth knowing
- Difficulty decides what a ride minute costs you in steps: 50 on Easy, 100 on Standard, 150 on Hardcore. Changing it applies from today. Earlier days keep the level they were played at.
- Apple Watch steps are included when you allow Health access and your Watch is contributing steps. Settings says which source is being used.
- Your history lives on your device and travels in your device backup. There is no iCloud sync in this version, so a backup is how your days reach a new phone.
